What Causes UTIs?
Up to 90% of UTIs have the same bacterial culprit: E. coli. Some other bacteria, such as K. pneumonia, can also cause them, but that’s unusual.
UTIs can also be triggered by Candida albicans, a fungal infection. Unfortunately, the antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections can cause fungal infections, complicating the issue. Because fungal infections don’t respond to antibiotics. And anti-fungal medications can’t kill bacteria. That can cause a situation where the UTI sufferer ends up taking two powerful medications that come with plenty of side effects.
And one of the main side effects common to both is disrupting balance in the gut microbiome. When that happens, a condition called dysbiosis, pathogens like E. coli can grow out of control. That potentially sets you up for recurring UTIs.
Adhesion is the other big issue involved in UTIs taking hold (literally). It’s the property that allows bacteria to stick themselves to the cells of your urinary tract. When the bacteria adhere to the lining of your urinary tract, they can grow and multiply there. That’s how they can hang on, linger, and create a full-blown infection on the spot.
In some cases, diuretics may be brought on board, with the idea of “flushing out the system” to force the bacteria out. But since your body already has that covered – it’s why you feel the urge to pee all the time – this added medication (or even herbal diuretics) can cause more problems than it solves. Diuretics take a harsh approach to this problem. That’s why it’s not recommended to use diuretics for more than a week or two. And they’re generally not considered safe for children or pregnant women (except under extreme conditions).

5 Ways to Prioritize Urinary Tract Health and Thwart UTIs

Holding it in, meaning not urinating when you feel like you have to, can increase your risk of developing a UTI. The longer urine sits in your bladder, the more time bacteria have to grow and multiply.
