Nerve Shield for Comfort and Function
Formulated to nourish and support the peripheral nervous system, Nerve Shield helps protect delicate somatic nerves that are critical to movement and comfort.
Somatic Nervous System
The peripheral nervous system consists of the autonomic nervous system, involved in involuntary body functions, and the somatic nervous system (SoNS), referred to as the voluntary nervous system. The somatic nervous system includes nerves that carry signals from the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to the muscles, and nerves that carry signals from the body to the central nervous system (efferent and afferent nerves). Efferent nerves are involved in muscle movement and afferent nerves send signals to the brain, communicating sensations such as heat, cold and pain or discomfort.
Nerves in the somatic nervous system are protected by a myelin sheath that is comprised of 76 percent lipids. This high-fat content shield protects the neurons and prevents signal interference in the nervous system.
Myelin can be damaged by injury or certain diseases and health issues, and it can be weakened by oxidation and lack of essential nutrients. Nerve Shield™ takes a three-pronged approach to nerve health, providing nutrients to: protect and support the nerve structure, promote blood flow, and address inflammation. Inflammation and reduced circulation can impede the delivery of nutrients needed to sustain healthy nerves.
Nerve Structure Support
B vitamins are crucial to the health of the nervous system. Thiamine (B-1), folic acid and B-12 are important to the structural integrity of the fats in myelin. B-6 is involved in the production of neurotransmitters that carry messages from one nerve cell to another. As all B vitamins are water soluble and not stored in the body, regular intake of these essential nutrients through food or supplements is crucial, and Nerve Shield delivers a good supply.
Phosphatidylcholine provides phosphatidyl compounds that help manufacture phospholids, lipids found in the myelin’s fatty protective layer.
Acetyl l-carnitine supports the health of nerve fibers, as shown in many double-blind, placebo controlled studies.
Alpha lipoic acid also supports nerve health by promoting healthy, normal nerve fibers. A powerful antioxidant, it protects the myelin from free radical damage, and it restores and recharges other antioxidants.
Plant-Based Antioxidants
Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) contains polyphenols, micronutrient phytochemicals that have antioxidant properties. The antioxidant protection of this Traditional Chinese herb has been shown in multiple studies.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is an Ayurvedic herb with antioxidant properties. Its effectiveness depends on bio-active and bio-available curcuminoids, and the turmeric in Nerve Shield is standardized to deliver 95% curcuminoids.
Inflammation Response
Chinese Skullcap is used in the Chinese tradition primarily for promoting healthy inflammatory pathways. It modifies the production of prostaglandins that can cause swelling and discomfort.
Turmeric also supports normal inflammation pathways by modulating compounds that play a role in inflammation.
Circulation
Delivering nutrients and removing toxins, a healthy blood flow is critical to maintaining physical health, including nerve health. In the Chinese tradition, a good flow of qi (energy) and blood to the extremities helps support nerve health.
Two Marvels Powder is an herbal combination that is routinely recommended in China to support a healthy nervous system. Nerve Shield includes the herbs that make up this well respected combination, Huang Bai (Phellodendron amurense) and Cang Zhu (Atractylodes lancea) in our Healthy Circulation Blend.
Alpha lipoic acid also promotes healthy circulation to the peripheral nerves.
Nourish and Support
Nerve Shield is formulated to deliver a combination of nutrients to nourish and support a healthy nervous system. Problems with the peripheral nervous system can result in continual discomfort and can reduce our ability to control our movements and communicate effectively with our central nervous system. Ingesting a good supply of essential vitamins and nutrients can help you maintain a healthy and effective nervous system.
