Drink more water

You might not be thirsty… but this is one of the first actions you should take if you feel a sugar craving coming on.

Multiple surveys have suggested that roughly 75% of Americans don’t drink the USDA recommended 8-10 glasses of water per day.

So, what does that have to do with sugar cravings?

If our body doesn’t take enough fluid, it starts to struggle with turning glycogen into energy.

When this happens, we start to crave sugar as an alternative energy boost!

So the next time you start to think about that tub of ice cream in the freezer… have a glass of water instead. Your craving may just vanish!

Go for a walk

One of the key issues with sugar cravings is that they’re so easy to give into. After all, the pantry and refrigerator is just downstairs in the kitchen…

So when a sugar craving starts to happen, it’s a good idea to put some distance between yourself and sugar.

That’s why we suggest taking a walk.

Not only does it make it impossible to immediately reach into the cookie jar, but it can also force us to start thinking about something else.

When our mind leaves thoughts of sweet treats behind, the craving often disappears!

Mix up your meals

It’s super easy to get into the same eating and cooking habits… especially if you live alone or don’t cook for anyone other than yourself.

That’s why we implore you to make sure you get enough variety amongst your meal choices.

One reason we can suffer from sugar cravings is because our body simply gets bored of our food routine.

It starts to crave a different stimulant for its senses, and sugar is a quick and easy way to do that.

So this week, pick out a few new recipes from that cook book you haven’t touched in months. You may be surprised at the results!

Replace sugary snacks with fruit

If you want to eat something sweet, but are afraid of overindulging, try a piece of fruit.

Fruits have naturally occurring sugars which, while they aren’t entirely ‘healthy’, are a darn sight better for us than the refined sugars found in candy bars.

By satiating your sweet tooth with fructose, you may feel the craving pass without needing to break out the Halloween candy.

Replacing your sugary snacks with fruit is also another great way to just put distance between yourself and your vice.

BONUS tip: Is “Cold Turkey” the best option?

It really depends.

For some of us, cutting out ALL sugars for as little as 72 hours can be enough to cut our cravings and strengthen our resolve.

However, plenty try this method with temporary success, only to fall back hard into old habits after a week or two.

If you know that “going cold turkey” will be an issue for you, here's our suggestion.

Start by replacing the sweets you do have… with better-quality, less-sugary sweets.

If you get to the end of the day and are in need of a chocolate fix, it is much better to reach for a couple squares of high-quality dark chocolate than it is to grab a whole milk chocolate bar.

Remember the importance of progress… it’s not about crossing the finish line on day one.

You may find that over time, those couple of squares become just one square… and eventually, you may not even crave a sweet at all!

Let’s make 2022 the year we beat sugar cravings for good!
