Traditional Mushrooms in Redd Remedies Supplements
Mushrooms have been used in many traditions for thousands of years for their health benefits. A growing consumer interest in them has made them increasingly available through farmers’ markets, natural foods and supplements, and it is driving the scientific community to engage in numerous studies and clinical trials to prove their effectiveness.
In addition to adding to culinary delight, mushrooms have been used throughout the years to support the health and functioning of virtually every human body system. Members of the fungal kingdom, mushrooms are more closely related to humans and other animals than they are to plants. As they are vulnerable to many of the same types of organisms that create problems for human health, the resistance they have developed contributes to the benefits they offer to humans who consume them.
Redd Remedies includes traditional mushrooms in many of our products, from our very first product, trueEnergy™, through our recently developed immune support products, Immune Everyday™ and Immune Advanced™. Here’s a brief review of the mushrooms we include in our products, most of which have been or will be addressed more fully in dedicated blogs.
Chaga
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) looks like a dark, crusty mass as it grows high up in birch trees throughout eastern USA and Canada. Although it may not look appealing, chaga is popular in the Siberian tradition. Its benefits are numerous, and it is quickly gaining more recognition for its contributions to healthy digestion, cardio strength and immune system function. We included it in our new Immune Everyday™ formula and will be writing more about this traditional mushroom in an upcoming blog.
Cordyceps
Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis), as stated, is included in our True Energy™ formula. It helps increase energy by supporting the delivery of vital oxygen throughout the body at a cellular level. It also supports immune system health and healthy liver function, which is why we included it in our Cholesterol Triple Care™ formula. (We will share more information on this interesting mushroom in an upcoming blog.)
Lion’s Mane
With a name inspired by its cascading white strands, Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is well respected in the Chinese Tradition for its restorative properties and support of cognitive function, particularly in the elderly. Its effects have been substantiated by scientific studies, and we have included it as a main ingredient in our Brain Awakening™ supplement. (It, too, will be covered more extensively in an upcoming blog.)
Maitake
Known in Japan as the “King of Mushrooms” and in English-speaking countries as “hen of the woods,” Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is part of traditional diet in China and japan. Maitake helps support healthy intestines and liver function, and it helps maintain balanced blood sugar. It also enhances healthy immune system function and is included in our Immune Everyday™ formula.
Reishi
One of the most well known of the traditional mushrooms, reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used in Asian cultures for over 2,000 years. Its title of “God’s herb” came from its reputation for promoting longevity and enhancing vitality. Although once reserved for the royal and wealthy, it is now cultivated and much more widely available. Its beneficial actions in helping to balance and regulate the body systems earned its classification as an adaptogen. We include reishi in these targeted natural supplements: Cholesterol Triple Care™, Lung Care™, SinuZyme™ and Immune Advanced™. (For more information on this traditional mushroom, read our blog: “Reishi: The Adaptogen.”)
Shiitake
Shiitake (Lentinus edodes) is another immune system supporting traditional mushroom that is included in our Immune Everyday™ formula. This mushroom contains significant quantities of vitamins C, B1, B2 and B12, along with niacin. It is reported to have the highest concentration of vitamin D2 of any plant food. It helps potentiate immune system function, supports healthy circulation and helps protect liver health. Not only is it tasty, it is very beneficial to overall health.
Turkey Tail
Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor) is another popular mushroom that we have included in our new Immune Advanced™ formula, due to its proven support for the immune system and gut microbiome. It grows is forests around the globe and has been brewed into tea and consumed for thousands of years throughout Asia. (More information on this mushroom can be found in a recent blog: “Turkey Tail for Immune Support.”)
